“Tesla Electric” Hits the Grid in Texas

Written By Luke Sweeney

While Elon Musk has been busy either saving or destroying Twitter, Tesla quietly announced Step 1 of a plan it’s been working on for years now.

Tesla Electric is a newly spun retail electricity division that uses solar panels and the company’s Powerwall batteries to capture, store, and inevitably sell power back to the grid.

Customers who buy into this plan would receive credits toward their bill in exchange for sharing some of their hoarded power.

As of right now, the rollout is only available for Texas customers, but once the rest of the country catches on, expect some major expansion.

After all, it’s a fantastic idea for fully equipped Tesla owners, especially considering the recent state of Texas’ electrical grid.

But more importantly, it’s a glimpse into the future of America’s and even the world’s energy infrastructure.

Tesla and other EV-makers are already flooding the world with batteries, but very soon, every household could have a massive Powerwall or other competent look-alike tucked away.

There’s no denying it: The future of the electrical grid is going to include an unimaginable amount of batteries.

The transition to renewable energy has been stalled slightly by COVID and the ongoing energy crisis, but it’s still inevitable. And this hybrid battery-grid system is a huge step in the right direction.

As you most likely know by now, renewables don’t play nicely with the grid without some form of energy storage. Engineers have been racking their brains to figure out the cleanest, cheapest way to do it.

But as it turns out, lithium batteries are still reigning supreme. Tesla’s Powerwall can handle an acceptable 20 kWh — enough to power the average household for just under 16 hours.

On paper, it sounds like a win-win for everyone involved. Homeowners have a robust backup plan, the grid gets a stability boost, and Tesla shareholders go home happy.

There’s just one problem: We don’t have nearly enough lithium.

And to Make Matters Worse…

Battery disposal today is practically nonexistent. Landfills probably contain more lithium than there is in every vehicle on the road.

Smartphones, computers, EVs, and now massive Powerwalls will all be headed to the landfill. Remind me again how this revolution is good for the environment?

If Musk and Tesla want to continue raking in the lithium dough, they're going to need a radical change of tactics.

Imagine if you could recover nearly every ounce of lithium from every single battery on Earth. It would instantly solve one of the last remaining problems with lithium batteries.

Well, you don’t have to imagine. Out of maybe a handful of companies that even have the know-how to recycle lithium batteries, only one has managed to recover 95% of the material inside.

Read that again: This company can recover the lion’s share of lithium and turn it back into 100% battery-grade material.

It’s not like most plastics, where each recycling cycle hands you back a worse and worse product.

Don’t believe me? Hear it from the expert himself. Energy guru Keith Kohl turned me on to this company a little while ago, and it’s been fascinating to watch it grow in such a short time.

Trust me, you’re going to want a piece of this.
