9 Things We'll See Down the Back Side of Peak Oil

Adapting to a Post-Peak Oil World

By Keith Kohl
Monday, March 29th, 2010

In 2007, my 9 Things That'll Happen When We Run Out of Oil list swept across the Internet and I had enough reader responses to keep me busy for two weeks.

Not only did readers respond, but I was surprised by how many doom and gloomers there were. Today, I wanted to bring a more light-hearted approach to peak oil. I'm rather curious as to whether or not your sentiment has changed... After all, crude has been trading over $80 per barrel for more than a week. With the geopolitical scene in an uproar today, it's difficult to see the bears winning the day.

How To Make Money From Every Car Produced

Despite what you may read in the papers, the global auto industry is thriving…

In fact auto production world-wide is increasing 6% this year.

And after a four-year study, we uncovered how you could get paid from every single one made — no matter what happens to an automaker’s share price.

Click here to find out how...

Last time, for the sake of brevity, I had to leave out some of my favorite submissions from readers. I'm hoping some of you will recognize your own work:

  1. Bootleggers will sell Vaseline on the black market for its petroleum content.
  2. The 45th President of the United States will be Amish.
  3. There's a renewed interest in HORSE-power.
  4. Buying a Ford Mustang in 2030 involves a leather or pleather saddle option.
  5. The Road Warrior will no longer be considered a story of fiction.

And with a little extra digging, my team and I uncovered some peak oil nuggets from the other side of the fence...

  • Peak oil is a scam designed to create artificial scarcity and jack up prices while giving the state an excuse to invade our lives and order us to sacrifice our hard-earned living standards. — Paul Joseph Watson & Alex Jones, The Myth of Peak Oil
  • I laugh at peakers not because of silly price predictions, but because they so easily confuse pricey oil with the Wal-Mart trucks stopping.
  • Peak oil was a useful propaganda tool in the 1950s when domestic U.S. production couldn't compete with Middle East oil. It's a joke among oilmen... but useful to energy brokers who have never set foot in an oil field.
  • Soon, very soon, the celebrity-worship ModernMediaCircus will be unable to hide the truth of Peak Oil Energy Descent. Unfortunately, the U.S. government doesn't have a PLAN. That's because they don't have the courage to get realistic about the problem. Instead, the ModernMediaMachine continues to serve up a menu of tasty tidbits in the form of sound bites attempting to rationalize why President Obama's escalation of a war should be rewarded with a Nobel Peace Prize, and Tiger Woods' lying, cheating, and thieving should be rewarded by continued reverence and undeserved "respect" for privacy. Don't be fooled — the party is over.
  • Peak oil is mainly an urban myth; and like very good urban myths, it is based on truths. The truth is oil production will peak someday — perhaps in the next decade. What's mythical about it is the sheer doom pornification of this event, creating a narrative of human civilization collapse. People abuse statistics and information is used just to get the point across.
  • Eugene Island is an oil field in the Gulf of Mexico, 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana. It was discovered in 1973 and began producing 15,000 barrels of oil a day which then slowed to about 4,000 barrels in 1989. But then, for no logical reason whatsoever, production spiked back up to 13,000 barrels a day.
  • "These huge reserves enable the Kingdom [Saudi Arabia] to remain a major oil producer for between 70 and 100 years, even if it raises its production capacity to 15 million barrels per day, which may well happen during the next 15 years..."
  • Everytime I hear the words "a model based on Hubbert's," my bullshit alarm bells start ringing like mad.

And Now... 9 (NEW) Things We'll See Down the Backside of Peak Oil

10. ExxonMobil creates the first combustible engine that runs on U.S. currency. In 2030, it turns out the dollar is worth more as a burned fuel.

9. Oil traders start buying candle-wax futures on the NYMEX.

8. Obama's health care plan is amended to include a new tax on sunshine for all Americans.

7. Sarah Palin reassures the tea party activists that oil is plentiful in Alaska, assuming the U.S. takes over Russia and western Siberia becomes part of her home state.

6. BMX now sells their latest bikes with free LoJack systems.

5. Nostradamus followers now study Nancy Sinatra's famous prediction. These boots are made for walking.

4. Following Richard Nixon's lead, politicians are now required to have a solution for energy independence, as well as a plan on how best to break their promises.

3. OPEC's oil production declines by 50%, yet members still insist their reserves have doubled... again.

2. Soylent Green wins the Oscar for "Best Documentary" in 2022.

1. In 2030...

If you're wondering why my 9 Things list has ten spots, it's because I wanted my readers to contribute the #1 spot. I want to know what you think should be on top.

Just as before, I don't want you to pull the punches; just keep it clean.

Interestingly, here is one of the reader responses I received last time:

"Energy and Capital is now called Capital as readers bank 1000% gains.

Sounds like a decent idea, doesn't it?

The interesting part is that half of this response came true... In fact, quite a few of my readers are up 1267% on one oil stock that catapulted in 2009. It's no secret there's a real oil bonanza happening in the U.S., and this free bonus report gives readers access to the best plays in America's last oil boom. Until next time,

the "IOUSA" will be looking entirely different in shape and territories. Palin/Bachmann Reality Refuseniks will take over the government in 2028 in the first election after martial law is rescinded, first imposed in 2012 when rioting broke out at the Democratic convention after "BHO" and 10 other leading Demos were blown to hell. We will have depleted the Ogallalah Aquifer wasting water to refine ADM corn ethanol instead of buying sugar ethanol from Brazil, so all of the corn aqnd wheat belt of KJansas and Nebraska is bought up by China to raise buffalo steaks for export to China, that are raised on the returned open prairie. Labanon KAS [or NEB?] is the new capital as all the coastal cities have been flooded out since 2020. Caucasians will be a minority and Hispanics will have repopulated and regained control of Old North Mexico that they lost to us in 1844. Mexico's Cantrell oil field is depleted so it now grows jatropha weed in the Baja - and Texas has been allowed to secede from the Union and rejoin Mexico. FUNNY ENOUGH?

In 2030, "Truck Farms" will become "Horse-and-buggy Farms. We will tease our grandchildren that in the old days we could buy just about any food frozen and then keep it in our own home, in a "freezer", and then heat it and eat it any time we wanted.

I have no idea in what form it will be but I believe that the true value of gold will be discovered by 2030 . My suspicion is that it will turn out to be of major value when it comes to energy and perhaps other things . I cannot believe that hanging it around peoples necks is all its good for , or as bricks that sit in a vault .

The rest of the world aspires to the standard of living of an average USA person. This indicates that four new planets like earth will have to be found in our SOLAR system to satisfy this need or the US will eventually have to cut its consumption of the dwindling world's resources. QED.
Comment by David of Hawaii on 2010-03-30
Hawaii Island has plenty of energy available from Geothermal but the government refuses to utilize it because it will not create as much pollution as shipping oil 10,000 miles and burning up non renewable resources.

On the bright side, according to some scientists, the earth has a 5 mile diameter core of uranium which is accessible for use in any nuclear power plant from any point on earth by drilling straight down 4000 miles. Perhaps a few feet more if you start from the top of Mount Everest. Disposal is not a problem. Drill another hole and drop the used uranium into it. As a heavy element, it will naturally sink to the bottom.

What if you hit hot rock or magma while trying to find the uranium. No problem, pour water on it and you have geothermal steam which you can use to create electricity and run electric cars.

Win/win solution. ;o}

The United States will suffer severe civil disturbances between citizens (those who have become government needers and those who focus on self reliance).

By 2030 foreward thinking communities will have relocalized due to the high cost of energy. Local businesses will be created to supply their needs as much as possible with local resources. A resurgence in local manufacturing will create new jobs. Communities will invest in energy co-ops to provide their electricity using whatever sources are most plentiful in their area be it solar, wind, geothermal, methane from waste, micro-nuclear, etc. Communities will reconfigure their designs to allow for walkable neighborhoods with easy access to work, shopping, entertainment. Local farmers will gain a resurgence in popularity as will community and backyard gardens. Transportation needs will be met with light rail, streetcars, maglevs, EV's. Self sufficiency will become the norm.

During the third world war 95 percent of population will die anyway, so the remaining oil will be enough to filter see water and let Saudi camels to drink...

Noah's Ark will be the premier source of transportation - no oil, flooded lowlands and lots of wind energy.

By 2025 half of all shopping malls will disappear. Those that remain will shift to renting the Big Box buildings to Goodwill Industries. For a time they will thrive as all goods sold will be sourced within a twenty mile radius and will be donated by the new Oakies leaving their foreclosed suburban homes and striking out for Canada. Smaller shops will be converted to live work units that complement self sufficient style sustainable like styles.

A religious cult led by Sara Palin will purchase the historic steel hulled sailing ships now in San Franciso and San Diego and refit them for a voyage to New Zealand. The saints on board will be tested during the three month voyage and on arrival will be disappointed to learn New Zealand won't have them, but will give them enough provisions to return from whence they came.

Whoever was first to say 'peak everything' got it right. Peak stock market, peak wealth, peak GDP and peak personal and national security are obvious ones. Food may take a little longer to peak because the rising CO2 levels are adding substantially to the world's food supply. With more people seeking fewer goods, we can expect less order, and increased poverty. None of it will be pretty, and energy alternatives being promoted have no chance of preventing the outfall of peak oil.
