Batteries With Built-In Fire Extinguishers?

Dear Reader,

An interesting turn of events this week for the unending saga of lithium battery fires.

Yes, there were more fires to report, including a major one in NYC which involved the partial destruction of an apartment building, but that’s not what I want to talk to you about today.

Today I’d like to focus more on the solution to the problem, as there’s one very compelling approach being developed right now.

Researchers at Clemson University have been able to successfully “fire-proof” a lithium battery by building a fire-extinguisher right into the battery itself.

It sounds a bit off-the-wall at first, but the new design has already proven effective in the “nail test” — a procedure where, as the name suggests — a nail is driven through a lithium-ion battery, rupturing the liquid electrolyte casing.

Aside from being fire resistant, these experimental batteries did not diminish in performance or complexity of production.

“Since our alternative electrolyte has similar physical properties to currently used electrolytes,” the researchers commented, “it can be readily integrated with current battery production lines. If the industry embraces it, we expect that companies will be able to manufacture nonflammable batteries using their existing lithium-ion battery facilities.”

A Fire Extinguisher Inside Every Battery!?

So it sounds promising, right? But my question to you is would you rather have a rechargeable battery with a built in fire extinguisher, or would you rather the battery be completely immune to catching fire in the first place?

Let me add more to the deal… What if this hypothetical fire-proof battery also had 3 times the charge capacity, up to three times the service life, and up to 70 times the charge speed?

It’s so much of a no-brainer that right now you’re thinking that I’m making all this stuff up, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

Because while Universities across the world are looking for ways to improve lithium-ion batteries, there is a company in Brisbane Australia that’s pioneering an entirely new kind of battery which delivers all of the above-cited performance statistics.

  • Charge capacity is big enough to propel an EV as much as 1000 miles on a single charge.
  • Charge/discharge cycle life expectancy in the thousands, not hundreds.
  • Charge time reduced to a minute or less.

This Could Do To Lithium What Lithium Is Trying To Do To Internal Combustion

With these batteries, which are currently in very limited early production, an electric vehicle could charge faster than you can currently fill your ICE car at the pump, drive all month, and have the battery outlast every other major system.

Oh, and if you’re worried about fires and the “nail test,” these batteries have already passed the “rifle bullet test.” Not only did they not catch on fire, but they also continued to function.

So yes, this isn’t just your typical next-gen rechargeable battery with a few added bells and whistles.

This is an entirely new breed of battery evolved to the point where it has the ability to not just disrupt the battery market, but a number of related markets as well.

Just think what automotive sales would look like if the standard EV could charge in a minute, drive a month, and do so with a zero chance of fire.

Several years from now, these batteries may well be the new standard, but today, they’re barely known to anybody outside of the industry.

A Whole New Battery… And There’s No Lithium At All

The company that’s pioneering this technology is itself a relative unknown, but with products like this in the works, that won’t remain the case for long.

Once the story breaks, you can expect the stock — currently trading at just over $1 — to rise to the next level.

I’ve been following this company for a while now, and with the ongoing downturn in the non-major indices (it’s been brutal, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel), you may never see share prices this low again.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: The Downfall of Tesla?

Lithium has been the front-runner in the battery technology market for years, but that is all coming to an end. Elon Musk is against them, but Jeff Bezos is investing heavily in them. Hydrogen Fuel Cells will turn the battery market upside down and we've discovered a tiny company that is going to make it happen...
