Once again, oil prices have proved they will not drop quietly into the winter. This afternoon, I quickly glanced at the television to check up on oil prices. After all, yesterday they were hovering around $85 a barrel. For a minute, I thought this was a sign that prices would finally start heading lower. I was wrong.
During trading today, oil jumped to a high of $90.60 per barrel!
So in honor of oil prices reaching another record today, I'd like to give you a light-hearted glimpse into the world of peak oil....
9 Things That'll Happen When We Run out of Oil
10. Embattled Senator Larry Craig (R. Idaho) begins writing what will soon become the N.Y. Times best-selling book, Taking a 'Wide Stance' on Alternative Energy.
9. Bush is overheard saying, "Hmm...maybe this solar energy thing ain't such a bad idea."
8. NASCAR races are shortened to 3 ½ laps. Drivers must hop to the finish in a ‘sack race'...Jeff Gordon still wins.
7. The U.S military pulls out of Iraq, saying, "Screw democracy."
6. Ford Launches new "Flintstones" option with detachable floorboards.
5. Decrepit oil drilling and pumping rigs around the world are purchased for 3 cents on the dollar by Disney Corp. for its new adventure ride.
4. Willie Nelson inks a deal with Exxon to promote a new line of hemp-powered "high-brid" vehicles.
3. Pasty, old, white politicians remind everyone that, "Skateboarding is not a crime -- it's an energy-efficient form of transportation...dudes."
2. Jiffy Lubes across the U.S. convert into coffee shops overnight.
1. In 2030, ...
Before you start wondering, there's a good reason why we said 9 and not 10... my top spot is incomplete. It's because I want to know what you think deserves the top spot.
All that I ask from you is this: Don't pull the punches, although judging from the countless emails I get every week from readers (I'd like to add that many of you have taught me a thing or two in the past), that won't be a problem.

Subject: Enjoy "cheap" gas while you can!
Believe it or not, compared to the price of crude oil, gasoline is cheaper than it ought to be.
Up to a year ago, the price of gas closely tracked the price of crude. This year things got really "hinky". For most of the summer gas prices were higher than they "should" have been, and now they are much lower. As crude oil is not likely to get much cheaper, gas will have to go up quickly to catch up.
Here in Grand Rapids, MI gas ranges from $2.72/gal - $2.99/gal. I saw one station that was $2.78/gal yesterday and is $2.99/gal today. To match historical trends, gas should be about $3.32/gal.
I figured this out from this chart:
http://www.grandrapidsgasprices.com/retail_price_chart.aspx
In the "Customize Price Charts" section below the chart, in Area 1 select your city or state, and in Area 2, just to help you feel grateful, select Canada Average. Select a Time Period of 1 year. Check the box "Show Crude Oil Price" and Create Chart. You should see your local gas price tracking crude closely on the left. On the right, the crude oil line is near $3.32/gal (gasoline equivalent), the local price is lower and Canada's is higher. The price of gas used to closely track the price of crude (try a time period of 2 years) so it will probably go up soon to match again.
Higher gas prices are headed our way, so enjoy it while you can!

Story: Higher than usual gun sales, and corresponding sales of body armour have been taking place.
The explanation seems to be that ordinary citizens are concerned about making it home safely with their rationed supplies from the inner city distribution centers.
Ever since the "BIG ENERGY CRUNCH" of 2025, food, water, and other supplies have been distributed from centralized urban locations due to the lack of fuel allocations to the commercial trucking industry.
Some suburbs are between 25 and 30 miles from distribution centers and the National Guard has been unable to stop highway bandits and looting of distribution centers.

Never commented before, thought I'd weigh in anyhow. (I enjoy your articles, so keep up the good work). Rather than supply a couple of backhanded comments on the subject, i thought i'd throw the unsightly facts on the table. After exhausting research (disclaimer - we are in the energy business and drill oil and gas wells), there are no current available large-scale alternatives for gasoline. Energy transportation, storage, and distribution infrastructure alone makes them something in the distant future, so we are going to have to get by on the fossil fuels for the next 25 years (yes we need to keep spending on the other potential alternatives). There are only 2 fuels that can replace some of the dirty gasoline that we use. Ethanol, which is not a very good choice for many reasons, and methanol, which is an excellent choice for many reasons. If the general public were told the facts, methanol would clearly be the alternative fuel of choice. The breakdown as to how and why is too lengthy to address in this forum. However, the general public will likely start to realize the ethanol shortfalls in the next few years, and methanol will surely become the alternative blending fuel of choice - again, there are no others. And there are also no viable energy sources to replace our transportation fuel usage in the near future. Rarely can we rely on someone to give them the straight facts when it comes to energy (too many politics and people not willing to do their homework). However, not only will methanol become the primary blending fuel - replacing ethanol as time goes by, but it stands to be in a position to be the "primary fuel" that gasoline currently has a strangle-hold on. Infrastructurally speaking, there is very little change needed with methanol, which is currently derived from coal and natural gas - the most abundant resources on the planet. Technology developments that are now available can make this fuel virtually emissions free, at a cost so low it's unbelievable. Perhaps yourself and any readers will position themselves in front of the change that is going to happen. At least i feel i have done my part in providing the truth (and the direction) to which energy WILL be headed.
Best of luck.
And gas here in the Sierra foothills is now $3.25 - fast approaching our all time high of $3.49 last summer. We'll see $4 within a year I think.
Today it seems there are two pre-dominant topics on Oil !
1. "We're about to run out of oil !!
2. We just made the "Find of the Century" of unlimited oil !!
Both sound like BS !!
One real question, please - -
Why are we allowing Day Traders to set the price of Oil ??
This fictitious price has nothing to do with the cost to produce a barrel of oil !!
That's ok, we'll be living on mars by then!

Thank You Keith Keep up the good work.
Thank you all readers great minds always think alike. I hope we will all be together soon to provise solution to a non stop energy chrisis.
Then you have the other pressing issue, Climate Change. The world has to get its butt moving and fast. Efficiency, saving, pedalling and everything possible has to come into the picture. It goes all the way to modifying the way we perform our daily errands. To work, shopping, going for vacation rides, you name it. It is a change of culture.
As all deep transformations, neither the oil-thirst, change to alternatives, climate change correction, or change of culture, will take place in one or two years. My guess is five to ten years for the appropriate, required combination to start taking hold. Meanwhile the whole world has to learn to live with and adapt to change. In conclusion, I think it is a transition marking the divide between the end and beginning of two eras.
By 2030 the Messiah will return and it will not matter anyway, he will defeat the flase one world leader who will appear to solve this problem, but will betray everyone in the end, bottom line do not worry about it, worry about following Christ, he is the only one who can fix this mess!
For all who thing not having fuel for a vehicle is the worst thing that can happen, tehre are worse faiths.

problem of Peak Oil. In fact, Peak Oil will be a paragraph in history.
