Siemens (NYSE: SI) has begun testing its newest wind turbine, said to contain the world’s longest rotor blades.

Field testing for the 6 megawatts offshore wind turbine is taking place in in Østerild, Denmark. The rotor blades clock in at 75 meters long, with a rotor diameter of 154 meters.

According to Siemens, these turbines will each produce 25m kW hours of electricity when complete, which can power 6,000 households.

Silicon Republic reports:

“The start of field testing of the 154-metre rotor for the 6MW [turbine] is an exciting step in the development of competitive technologies for the large offshore wind farms of the future,” said Henrik Stiesdal, chief technology officer of the wind power division within Siemens Energy.

This turbine will be the lightest in its class, at just 200 tons, and is being developed specifically for the demands of offshore installation.

The turbine started its test on October 6.

Vestas (CPH: VWS), meanwhile, is plugging away at developing a turbine that will outdo even this one, as it will feature 80-meter long blades, a tonnage of 800 tons, and a height of 187 meters. It will provide 8 MW of power.
