Welcome to the Energy and Capital Weekend Edition — our insights from the week in investing and links to our most-read Energy and Capital and sister publication articles.

The secret is out.

And it’s about time, too.

Following the release of the latest North Dakota oil study, the media is finally starting to understand… But I have a feeling that, by the end of 2010, it’ll be too late for the average investor.

You see, when the USGS Bakken assessment was released in April 2008, the study reported the Bakken formation as holding up to 4.3 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil.

What you probably don’t know is that the USGS report missed the mark.

Here’s why…

When the USGS published their Bakken survey, the agency completely underestimated a second oil formation beneath the Bakken. They added approximately 500 million barrels from the Three Forks formation to the Bakken estimate.

The interesting part is that the USGS only had access to data on vertical wells drilled into the Three Forks formation. As you know perfectly well, the key to unlocking the oil in the shale was through horizontal drilling and fracturing techniques.

North Dakota Oil Study

A recently released North Dakota oil study confirmed our suspicions — the Three Forks formation holds as much oil as the now-famous Bakken formation.

In other words, North Dakota has may have just doubled their oil reserves.

Before you jump on the hype, remember that we’ll still need a few more years before they can tack on the Three Forks crude to their proven reserves.

But here’s the best part: Oil companies that are now tapping the Bakken formation have a second target.

In the words of Harold Hamm, CEO of Continental Resources, "We can harvest both from one pad. It’s two for one and it’s really nice."

It’s a win-win situation for us.

Unfortunately, it’s only a matter of time before this opportunity is closed… But I’ve prepared this free bonus report, giving you my favorite Bakken-Three Forks stock operating in North Dakota today. You won’t want to waste any time cashing in on this play.

Enjoy your weekend,
