General Electric (NYSE: GE) and Urban Green Energy (UGE) have collaborated to develop the world’s first electric vehicle charging station that’s completely integrated with a wind-powered solution.

The Sanya Skypump utilizes UGE’s 4K vertical wind turbine as well as GE’s Durastation EV charging systems to provide a charging solution that runs completely on renewable energy.

UGE Iberia, UGE’s Spanish branch, has installed the first such station at the Cespa headquarters, the world’s biggest investor in private transportation infrastructure, near Barcelona. The companies expect to install more stations across the U.S. and Australia, particularly targeting major malls and universities.

From GE’s press release:

“Since launching the Sanya Skypump, we have received inquiries from companies around the world that are looking to embrace sustainability,” said Nick Blitterswyk, CEO of UGE. “The Sanya Skypump is one of those rare products that enable institutions to demonstrate their commitment to the environment while providing a really useful service as well.”

Charles Elazar, marketing director of GE Energy Management’s Industrial Solutions business in Europe, says, “GE is launching a family of electric vehicle charging systems in Europe offering domestic and commercial users a range of easy-to-use, flexible systems to help make electric vehicles a practical, everyday reality.”

GE has a demonstrated investment in electric vehicles, and has plans to buy 25,000 such vehicles for corporate use by 2015.

Urban Green Energy, based in New York, creates wind and solar solutions for both corporate and private use and presently has installed systems in more than 65 countries.
