Welcome to the Energy and Capital Weekend Edition — our insights from the week in investing and links to our most-read Energy and Capital and sister publication articles.

Is it safe to look?

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve asked that question many times throughout this recession…

And, just as if you were watching a gruesome scene in a horror film, chances are good that you covered your eyes at some point during the last few weeks.

Some took shelter. Others simply ran for the nearest exit.

Let’s run through the highs and lows of the week:

  • Oil prices fell below $69 a barrel over more troubling news coming out of Europe. Still, some hold on to hope that the latest market turmoil is merely the first correction in the latest bull market.

  • The anti-offshore sentiment didn’t take long to settle in after the Deepwater Horizon explosion. Complaints surfaced recently that the Minerals Management Service (MMS) allowed BP and other offshore companies to drill in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) without acquiring the proper permits.

  • According to experts, BP’s recovery effort may be too little… Researchers from Purdue University said that the amount of oil leaking into the GoM is grossly understated. They project that between 25,000 and 100,000 barrels of oil a day is spilling into the water.

  • Have we finally seen the bottom for natural gas? Although prices have been hovering near $4/Mcf for weeks, it may be time to take a fresh look at natural gas investments. My colleague, Ian Cooper, gives readers a heads-up regarding the summer’s ultimate contrarian bet.

One thing that we can count on is the huge buying opportunity created by this tumultuous market.

Of course, you need to start somewhere…

Below, I’ve included some of this week’s top-read articles from Energy and Capital and our sister publications, Wealth Daily and Green Chip Stocks.

Enjoy your weekend,
