Famous Oilman Swaps Wind for Natural Gas

T. Boone Pickens made a bad call.

It seems that building a massive $2 billion dollar wind farm in the middle of nowhere wasn't that good an idea after all...

The famous oilman had a conference call this week, declaring that he is cutting his proposed wind farm on the Texas panhandle in half.

But the problem doesn't have to do with the windmills, or even wind. The problem has to do with right of ways, NIMBYs, and the long-distance power lines necessary in the transport of the energy to where it is needed.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "Mr. Pickens in May 2008 announced plans for the biggest wind farm in the U.S., by amount of installed megawatts, to be located in the Texas panhandle. But Tuesday he said he would cut his order with GE to 333 turbines from 667 machines and use them for wind farms in Canada and Minnesota."

It's like getting a piece of the automobile market back in 1908.

And not just Ford either. We're talking about the market as a whole. Oil, rubber tires, road construction... the whole nine yards!

Another reason Pickens is cutting the wind farm idea is because the situation on the ground has changed. Two years ago, an alternative energy source — natural gas — was in limited supply and heading towards $15 a barrel.

Since then, companies like Chesapeake Energy (NYSE: CHK) and XTO Energy pioneered new drilling methods that increased natural gas supply by more than 58% in just four years.

It is now estimated that the U.S. has enough natural gas to last 100 years. And just this week, the U.S. became the world's largest natural gas producer.

These facts, coupled with the recession, drove natural gas prices down to $3 per billion BTUs.

The Good Gas

The benefits of natural gas may seem obvious: it is colorless, odorless, and burns clean. What may not be so obvious, though, is the fact that natural gas is one of the cheapest forms of energy production we have — especially for sectors like transportation.

According to the New York Times, "Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel, emitting fewer greenhouse gases than coal or oil. Many experts say they think it's underused as a power and transportation fuel, especially after new technologies recently unlocked huge reserves in shale gas fields across the country."

The problem lies with the traditional and ingrained coal and oil interests this country has. These interests seek to preserve the status quo. They are fighting a rearguard action, however, as no new coal utilities are being built and we are running out of low cost oil.

The green interest, on the other hand, has no desire to see a hydrocarbon based solution — despite the fact that the cost of solar and wind aren't economical, especially for transportation.

(I should mention that the Solar EnerTech (OTC: SOEN) recently claimed it has brought the watt per kWh below $3.09, which would make it competitive with natural gas... at least when it's sunny.)

The green lobby wants battery-powered and hybrid vehicles, despite the fact that batteries are very toxic and require non-renewable minerals that must be mined. Furthermore, you can only drive the electric car a short distance before recharging.

The hybrid has its own problems. I've read that without the weight of the second engine, hybrids would get just about the same gas mileage. Heck, my brother's 1985 Honda CRV got 47 mpg on the highway. The Toyota Prius, by contrast, gets only 36 mpg on the highway.

I've yet to have a patchouli-smelling, Birkenstock-wearing auto engineer explain that mileage per gallon discrepancy to me...

No Infrastructure

The biggest hindrance to having a world of cars that run on compressed natural gas is the lack of infrastructure: You just can't go down to the Exxon and fill up your tank.

And this is what T. Boone is trying to change. He is launching a new ad campaign in which his commercials will focus on the abundance of natural gas in the U.S. and our dependence on OPEC.

According to the New York Times:

He wants the president to convert the entire federal automobile fleet to natural gas. Then he wants Congress to give large tax credits to companies that use natural gas vehicles, and filling stations that install the necessary equipment. By Mr. Pickens's estimate, just fueling a small percentage of the country's trucks and buses with gas could displace as much as 8 percent of oil imports within seven years.

I think Mr. Pickens is on the right path. He wants the government to jump-start the transition to make it viable.

We Don't Need the Government

The switch to natural gas for filling stations will happen anyway — with or without government backing. ExxonMobile (NYSE: XOM), arguably the best-run oil company on the planet, recently bought out XTO energy for $30 billion.

"XTO more than doubled production in the past four years, largely from unconventional drilling, while Exxon's output fell 1.2 percent, company filings showed. European oil majors Statoil ASA, Total SA and BP Plc bought into shale-gas joint ventures with XTO rival Chesapeake Energy Corp. in the past two years," according to Businessweek.

That says it all. The old independent oil majors can't increase production without natural gas. It is now in their best interest to promote natural gas for all our energy needs.

And T. Boone Would Clean Up, As Well

T. Boone has a company called Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE) which "offers natural gas as an alternative fuel for vehicle fleets in the United States and Canada. It designs, builds, finances, and operates fueling stations and supplies compressed and liquefied natural gas."

It's been a good year so far...

Another company building NG infrastructure is Chicago Bridge and Iron (NYSE:CBI).

Natural gas is the future. ExxonMobile and other big oil companies have capitulated and joined the cause.

It's only a matter of time before you drive a clean-burning NG car.

What about the environment damage caused by hydrofracturing and it's tremendous, unaccounted-for environmental costs? What about the climate change effects of burning another fossil fuel. Fossil fuels must be replaced with renewable and no-carbon energy going forward. Are the costs of this and carbon emmissions rolled into the cost equation of natural gas? - I think not. Until the TRUE cost of a particular energy form is determined, it should not be invested in.

What Prius and CRV are you talking about?

In 3 years of driving my Prius in western ny with lots of snow and cold, on the highway and on local roads, I have averaged 48 MPG in a safe, comfortable, convenient, almost zero- maintenance car that holds 5 adults and there stuff.

The "CRV" you are talking about is a 2-passenger Honda CRX sports car that had enough cargo space for a box of kleenex. A CRV is a mini SUV that would be lucky to break 24 mpg.

I do love the fact that you included the "low cost oil" line. So many people argue against the Peak Oil theory. It has an identity crisis, it should have been the Peak Affordable Oil Theory and peak affordable food if we continue to rely on it.

Natural gas is already available for use in transportation right in your home or in the gas lines in the street from your utility - just install a pressure-converter pump in the garage where the auto sits to be filled. For long distance travel the filling stations would be required. Cars and buses already have the technology and use NG as a fuel - just require new cars to be NG engines. Oil imports could be completely eliminated. Pickens is on the right track.

I like natural gas but it does create environmental problems in it's extraction that need to be dealt with.
Switching to rail for long distance hauling has many advantages including the possibility of electrifying much of the system.
I often wonder what we would do if were forced to end our dependence on fossil fuel? Therein the answer lies the answer to what we "should do".

Funny thing about all the hub bub here is We were running some of our lite truks and cars on this and L.P. gas untill the late 70s. Then our unwise government put so much regulation and tax on it that people like me just took all the equipment off our trucks and cars and put it in storage.
This is old technology. Any spark ignited I.C.E will use these fuels!!!

Do not hold your breath on CNG vehicles in general usage. Because of the high pressure tanks, such vehicles are or should be limited to use by fleets where trained technicians can fuel and maintain them. Ford and GM both gave up on their programs when 2 vehicles blew up during the fueling process because of tank failures. 6000 PSI gas, even inert nitrogen, is not something the general public is qualified to play with. Any new program for such vehicles will be instantly aborted when the first one blows. I know, because I was involved in those programs, trying to design fuel injectors for same. Very tricky business because one is dealing with a gaseous media.

Pickens may be smart, and he may be rich, but he's just proven that he does not understand the issues of alternate sources of energy. I knew the minute I first read of his scheme that he had not even been reading the papers re the NIMBY issues with wind turbines. Rich liberals that want this transition scream the loudest when anyone mentions wind turbines in their back yards. See: Teddy Kennedy.

My Toyota Prius gets 50mpg on the highway going 65-70mph. And about the same in town. I do agree that a lightweight/small vehicle could do almost as well. I drove a diesel VW Rabbit in the early 1980's that got 55 mpg on the highway (when it ran).

What do you consider a short distance? The vast majority of car trips are of the short distance variety. Shouldn't the focus be on changing the energy system used to one which is 100% renewable, not just another temperary fix that will require re-tooling 25 years down the road.

Before you jump fully on the CNG bandwagon check the New Zealand experience On my first tour of the country in 1988 almost every filling station had a CNG pump.On my last trip in 2007 very few had such pumps. Personal experience trying to run an airport shuttle van sevice with CNG powered vehicles adds to my skepticism.To get about half the range of a tank of gasoline required a very large CNG tank pressurized to 3000 psi which was once the favored component in IEDs in the Middle East. Also filling time added about an hour of unproductive time on the clock for the drivers. After a very sincere try at being green we gave up after 9 months.Only government fleets where cost effectiveness is not a requirement are compatable with CNG.

You didn't mention that gas burns so clean that engines on it go much further between oil changes. Also, your brothers Honda that got 47 mpg had to have been a civic, not a big boxy crv with all that wind resistance.

What no one is telling us is what kind of gas mileage does a natural gas car get. E85 is a joke the places I see it want as much or more than regular gas & mileage is less the more alchol in the fuel. I have been racing with methanol since 1985 so I have a little experience in this area.

The person or persons that wrote this natural gas article displayed ignorance in stating that, "Two years ago, an alternative energy source — natural gas — was in limited supply and heading towards $15 a barrel." Natural gas is not sold by the barrel! Please be more careful in your statements.
Otherwise the article was very good.

In your determination to make your point you misstated the Prius performance. My worst mileage on my 2007 Prius was 43 MPG when my fuel injectors and air filters needed cleaning. My average is about 47-48. The new ones are running 51-61. I have had 3 years of trouble free operation.

This is not true. My Prius 2005 get routinely ~60 on highway long trips with 4 people and A/C working full time. In the winter it is less but still >50 (mostly due to idiotic fuel additives like ethanol). You do not have to denigrade decent technology to sell the NatGas. It is an excellent source of energy and it can stand on its own. By making such easily verifiable wrong claims you reduce the value of your article.

Never could see justifying the colossal scale, infrastructure requirements, & long-term payoff of these "wind farms." Why the aircraft engine-sized turbines, unsightly towers, & expensive blades? I'm only an architect, but it seems a more aesthetic design, multiple (& easily replaceable) "turbines" (really just off-the-shelf fan blades!), & a less overscaled power delivery grid would make this a lot more attainable. We here in NC are going to have a VC/Angel Investor conference early in the spring to hopefully find some of the more interesting projects to solve the obvious problems that Mr. Pickens, GE, DOE, et al, seems to have "baked into the cake" with the "bigger is better" approach. The other thing that occurs at this scale is simple change-outs of components, maintenance, etc. became major projects unto themselves, when smaller-scope, shorter downtime issues should be the goal of any alternative energy approach.

Interesting article. I agree that the U.S. should encourage the use of natural gas for their transportation needs. Even some backwards nations like Thailand are doing so. When I was there It cost about 1/3 as much to fill up a car on natural gas than gasoline As a result all of the taxis and a lot of other forms of transportation there run on natural gas which makes it cheaper to take a taxi than it does to take your own car somewhere if you are running on gasoline.

Also I would bet you a tanker full of gasoline that your brother or anyone else is getting 47 mpg on the highway out of a 1985 crv. For one thing, there is no such thing as a 1985 Honda crv. Even if there was, the only way it would get 47 mpg would be going down a very steep hill with a 100 mph tailwind. Also, a 2010 prius is rated at 48 mpg on the highway and up to 56 mpg in the city. With such innacurte information you put forth in your article, your credibility is pretty low as far as I am concerned. I agree with your premise 100% but I would find it hard to follow any investment advice you would give.

In reference to my previous comment on your article about natural gas cars:
I may not be a patchulli-smelling Birkenstocks wearing automotive engineer (actually I only maintained a fleet of cars that included more than 30 Priuses from 2001 models to 2008 as well as more than 30 natural gas cars for a department of the City and Co. of San Francusco) but I hope I explained the "discrepancy" between the mileage figures you quoted in your article.
By thr way, the 2001 Priuses averaged about 41 mpg combined and the newer ones were even better. The natural gas cars would only get between 80 miles (Ford ltd)and 140 miles (Honda civic)before they would have to be refueled. Not only that the natural gas cars had a tendency to clog up their fuel delivery system and stall out. Very disconcerting to the city employees trying to do their jobs.

Professor R Santilli has a cost effective plant which produces a hybrid natural gas from raw sewage which is capable of fueling cars ths is a very cost effective off the shelf solution which is currently arousing a shed load of interest in asia and europe you should have a look at Magnegas.com this kit is a no brainer and hugely scalable with a 1Mw plant capable of processing 1,000,000 gallons of sewage sludge per day and producing 50m/3 of gas per hour,I think the feedstock might just be sustainable!
